1 week

My baby girl is a week old already! I hope they all don't pass this quickly, but something tells me they will!

She's precious! She sleeps most of the time and I have to get her to wake up to eat. I hope I'm not jinxing myself by saying that!

Here is a little preview of the pictures we had taken this evening:

Special Delivery

My last post at 12:28am on July 22nd ended with: "Tomorrow we get to finally meet Kaitlyn Elizabeth!" Little did I realize just how quickly "tomorrow" was going to get there! I guess, technically at 12:28, it already was the tomorrow I was talking about. I had been on the pitocin drip maybe an hour at that time. Between 12:30 and 1:30, Taylor had made her bed and gotten to sleep; Bruce was working on settling into his bed and finished up posting his updates to facebook. Just as he got settled, I announced I think my water had broken. We called the nurse in and she didn't think so at first, but then agreed. Starting right then I began strong contractions --every minute on the minute! They gave me some pain medication through my IV (I'm thinking demerol and something else) that mainly made me extremely sleepy. I couldn't tell it was doing a thing for pain. Next thing I knew, I had an oxygen mask on a several more nurses. The oxygen mask made it really hard to breathe during the contractions so I kept taking it off. The nurses and Bruce kept yelling at me to keep it on for the baby. I really didn't understand what all was happening. Apparently, each time I contracted, Kaitlyn's heartbeat would become very faint. I couldn't be given an epidural because that lowers your heartrate anyway, which we couldn't do since Kaitlyn was having problems. They thought the umblical cord was wrapped around something or was being affected during the contractions. The nurses had called in Dr. Gardner. She arrived about 3:30. She told me that we needed to do a c-section, which by this time, I was only aware that I wanted this over asap and I wanted the nurses to quit jacking with my bed everytime I was contracting. They didn't wast anytime getting me prepped and into the OR. Once I got in the OR they gave me a spinal block which was FANTASTIC! I finally didn't feel any pain and the other meds they had me on made me sleep through everything for the most part. I woke up to the sound of some healthy lungs and a beautiful, perfect little tiny angel weighing in at 6.1lbs and 18.5 inches long. A head full of thick black hair, long eyelashes and a beautiful complexion as everyone has seen now either in person or all of the pictures taken by her very proud daddy and other family and friends. I did hear them say at one point that she wasn't breathing on her own very well, but that was only for a moment due to the medicine I was on that had passed to her.

The original plan for getting me induced slowly and breaking my water Wednesday morning didn't really work out as planned. Kaitlyn couldn't wait any longer to get here! Recovery in the hospital was very easy and every nurse was super nice and most helpful. The first night I kept Kaitlyn in the room until 4am and she only fussed a few times. The 2nd night she was in the nursery between 2am and 5am. We had a lot of visitors. Everyone is excited about our little blessing. Taylor is the best big sister ever! She stayed with us 2 of the 3 nights (even though she missed staying one night --she got back early the next morning) and she stayed busy changing diapers, making sure everyone signed in and had their picture taken. Taylor has a special way of getting Kaitlyn to open her eyes and stop crying as soon as Taylor gets Kaitlyn in her arms. For being confined to a room for a few days, we all did really well I think.

We got to come home Friday afternoon around 3:00. Kaitlyn's first night at home went really smooth. She slept most of the time, even some in her crib. Feeding is a little challenging but she and I are both learning and doing better.

We recieved alot of nice flowers, messages given to the hospital for us and one of our cousins, Amanda, had taken the pictures already posted online and created a wonderful photo album that she brought up on Thursday!!

We did get out of the house today for about an hour to take Kaitlyn to meet one of her Great-Grandmothers. She'll be 81 this year and Kaitlyn makes her 28th grand/great-grandchild. We didn't tell her we were coming and she was very excited to see us!

Dr. Appointment

I guess that was my last prenatal appointment. The sonogram showed that I was losing fluid and the dr. said I was dialated to a 2. She decided since I was losing I needed to be induced!!

I was figuring maybe friday since she said sometime this week...that turned out to be at 10:00 tonight!! So here we are, in the hospital --all bedded down for the night. I'm hooked up to the pitocin to start this process slow and steady! We'll see how that works out.

Tomorrow we get to finally meet Kaitlyn Elizabeth!

Nesting

Six days until the original due date! (Although, the date given after one of the sonograms was August 2nd.) I think I have fallen into the "nesting" phase, as they say happens. Last weekend, I made sure all of our laundry was done and then some, vacuumed and cleaned the carpets and even organized our closet. We'd been on the run so much during the last few months, that nesting or not, I really just needed to catch up. My sister and I also enjoyed an afternoon of manicures and pedicures. I also got my hair cut!

Kaitlyn's bedroom is ready and waiting for her -- as well as her vast wardrobe!

Bruce has been nesting as well I think. He's also been doing some house cleaning (which he's pretty awesome at doing that anyway) and washing our cars inside and out. (which I think must be why it finally rained today!) Here's some pictures we took on our way home today:

Bruce, with the help of Jeff and Jim, started getting his own items in order before Kaitlyn gets here. Early "nesting" for Hunting season. We can't bring a new life into this world without a suitable deer blind right!?!
Taylor and I have packed our bags for the hospital and Kaitlyn's is packed too! We also have been working on a very important project for all of our visitors at the hospital and those that come over afterwards. Some people hand out cigars and some hand out candy-bars with special labels. Taylor and I have been doing bottle duty! Not baby bottles, but bottles for celebration! We'll be handing out little wine bottles with Kaitlyn's Grandpa's homemade wine. He bottled all the wine for us and Taylor and I have been labeling, tying ribbons and putting the shrinks on.

I have another dr's appointment Tuesday with a sonogram! Can't wait to see how things are shaping up! The one area I still need to "nest" for is the kitchen -- need to grocery shop and THEN...I think we'll be all ready!

Update from the 4th

We both had dr's appointments today. I was much more interested in his appointment than mine.
His Dr. told him that given the scenario and environment, he did have a heat stroke. Which - those can be fatal so I thank God that the right people were there at that place in time. I'm also greatful that it isn't something more serious, however, I'll be watching him like a hawk for any little sign!

My dr's appointment was pretty routine. Kaitlyn isn't quiet ready yet I guess ..which I'm glad about. After last weekend, I need some time to recoup and rest up before the next 18 or so years!! My bet is on the 1st week in August she will get here. Bruce seems to think before then. Just not next week for sure, my doctor will be out of town!

Calm Before the Storm

Here's a glimpse of the fun we were having before Bruce's incident---which we'll hopefully learn more about tomorrow at the dr.!

4th of July

For years (more than 15 years) I have been celebrating July 4th with my best friend Lindsey and her family every year at Possum Kingdom Lake. I always have spectacular pictures from the amazing fireworks at Hell's Gate and very fun memories from every year I'm fairly certain.
This year, Lindsey invited us up, cautiously, since I'm in my 9th month of pregancy. Going with her though ensured me I could have my car close and my family since both Bruce and Taylor could be there this year. I told Taylor how exicted I was she could share in this tradition and how much fun it was going to be with all the boats and swimming in the best lake in Texas!

Little did I know just how exciting and memorable this year would turn out to be!

Lindsey's uncle has a house at Hell's Gate so we drove up there and walked down to his house boat. From there we could float all around the lake on our floaties. The water was the perfect temperature - good music all around - lots of family and friends!

About 3 or 4 hours after we'd been floating Taylor decides she need to go to the bathroom so Bruce gets out to help her. Next thing I know, Bruce has collapsed on the house boat and Taylor has turned screaming for me. I get up the ladder as fast as a big pregnant lady can. Bruce was out cold and non-responsive. Taylor did such a great job yelling for me while getting his phone out to call 9-1-1. Apparently, he had sat on the 2nd step heading to the top deck of the houseboat and started to convulse. He slid down the stairs and hit his head. Thank God Jeff Casey was there, one of Bruce's best friends and Lindsey's boyfriend, who is now a Fort Worth Firefighter. He was on the scene and got Bruce to come to and into a chair in the shade. I could tell that he was alert but not completely coherent. He couldn't focus very well and wasn't making much sense. Next thing we knew, he was convulsing again and he became non-responsive again. His eyes were glassed over and not focusing, Jeff was having a hard time finding his pulse, as was I when I had ahold of his wrist. He came back and started throwing up and sweating. After that spell he seemed to be better. Someone had called 911 by then and the Brazos River Authority got there quickly and called the EMT who got careflight on the way.

During his 2nd spell, Lindsey had taken Taylor up to the house, but they'd gotten back down there by the time they were loading him on the spinal board. As I told Taylor, I was sure sorry she had to see all of that and she was shaken up, however I super glad she was there. She helped me keep it together. I did what I could to keep her from being exposed to more and as they loaded Bruce on the EMT boat I told him I'd meet him at the hospital right away.

Taylor and I hiked back up to the house as quickly as we could. Taylor decided she'd had enough "fun" for one day so we met her mother in Millsap and I made it to JPS in 1 hour and 38 min! Not too bad for driving better than normal if truth be told! I called his Dad so he could get a head start and hopefully be there when Bruce landed. I called and left his mom a message, as she was out of town and most other people I could think of were not close either since it was about time for getting to where you needed to be for fireworks.

Bruce had only been at the hospital long enough to have a c/t scan and get down to the ER for just a little bit when I arrived. The nurses said his C/T came back clear and we were free to go. Still unsure as to why he originally fell out in the first place. I'm leaning towards Heat Stroke and Dehydration. However, we'll be getting a dr's appointment to be sure it's nothing more serious. I did ask the nurses about concussion since he'd fallen since they hadn't mentioned that yet either.

They released Bruce and I didn't have his shoes or a shirt for him --he was still in his swim shorts. They gave him a nice pair of tourqoise socks to wear out. He was starving and not very happy that we made him take careflight since he was "fine." He is having a hard time remembering things during this time and I don't think he fully understood how scary and touch and go it seemed there for a while. We stopped by McDonald's on the way home and it was there I realized that Taylor and I had been in such a hurry that my shorts were on inside out!

Bruce's other best friend Jim Britt (also a Fort Worth Firefighter) called and he and his wife cut their 4th of July festivities short when hearing about Bruce's incident. They came back to town and Jim decided he'd come stay the night with us incase something happened. I can't imagine how the day would have been without these great and caring friends! I know it's hard to remain professional when it's your best friend you're having to 'work' on. I woke Bruce up every hour on the hour all night.

It was truly scary and all kinds of thoughts have time to go through your head for an hour and a half drive...being within weeks of delivery didn't help either I don't think. Or when you're waiting for the next hour to come around to wake him up to check on him. This was one night when snoring was a great sound! It's times like these, I guess that you realize more than ever that you not only need someone in your life but more than that, you want them there and you don't want to imagine any other way.

Bruce was also upset that I had dropped Taylor off or really that things happened to where I had to. He was very anxious to see her this morning and let her know he was ok. Taylor had an idea to surprise him so she and her mom and I all worked together so I could pick her up and bring her home before he expected to surprise him. She'd made him a great little book called "A story of I Love You" along with a get well card.

Lindsey called to check in this morning and told me the fun didn't stop there. She said there was some other excitement too. Her granny's houseboat, which has been the venue for family fun gatherings for years sunk last night. The 4th of July is tradition for her family. This is the 1st year in the history of that houseboat being in their family that there wasn't someone staying on it.

All in all -- as bad as things were yesterday, things could have been soo much worse. Even though I will have no pictures of fireworks this year..it will definetly be one of the MOST memorable! I feel very fortunate that Bruce seems to be feeling 100% today and that no one was staying on Granny's boat this 4th of July.
I also heard the fireworks were just as good as any other year but they weren't the headlines of this year's 'festivities"!!
